Thank you for submitting ‘The Politeness State: The State of Politeness Downunder’ to RSP. The article has now been refereed and I am sorry to have to tell you that we are unable to publish it. Subject: Decision – Redundancy
Dear Bruce
On 30 January 2025, Reed StClair Acting Pro Vice Chancellor Arts, Law, Psychology and Social Sciences and I met with you to discuss a change proposal for the School of Social Sciences focused on Sociology, Criminology, Social Policy and Speculative Studies. You were advised at that meeting that the change proposal if adopted would see three FTE academic positions disestablished including potentially your position of Professor based on stated criteria. You were provided with a copy of the change proposal and were also invited to provide comment and feedback on this proposal which you have done. Following careful consideration of the feedback and using the stated criteria in the change proposal, we advised you today that your position of Professor would be disestablished and therefore you will be entitled to redundancy compensation. Your notice period of three months commences as of 6 March 2025, your last day will be 5 June 2025.

Irene Lightfeather

Subject: Alexander Cancer Centre – Cyber Incident
Dear Bruce
The Alexander Cancer Centre (ACC) recently became aware of a cyber-security incident where an unidentified malicious actor gained unauthorised access to a widely used IT platform in the primary healthcare sector and downloaded some data.
As soon as we became aware of the incident, all affected systems were deactivated and we retained the services of leading cyber-security and forensic I.T. advisors to assist us in containing the incident, securing our systems, and commencing a forensic I.T. investigation into what occurred. We are advised that this investigation may take some time to complete.
Interim findings of our investigation so far indicate that some of the data downloaded by the unidentified third party has now been published on the dark web (the dark web is a hidden part of the internet not searchable by the general public using search engines like Google, and requires specialised software and skills to access).
Unfortunately our image storage system was affected, which means the third party may have downloaded your medical history, laboratory reports and image files relating to you; for example, close-up images of lesions which may include your face.
Yours sincerely,
Amy Roberts

What is the job? Logistics Operations Specialist (LOS – 9). On a SPACESHIP, Bruce. A big fucking spaceship. An interstellar spaceship.
What is the pay? You mean apart from being on a spaceship? Well there is curing your cancer and all your other medical conditions. You haven’t looked after yourself for a very long time, Bruce. You’ll get an allowance to cover any incidentals. When your contract is done, well drop you back at the pickup, with a generous sign-off. A million? How does that sound?
Why you? We think you are a motivated candidate. You will be dead in less than 2 years, even if you could afford the best treatments. Which you can’t. Plus you are gifted, Bruce. Top 2% but not in the troublesome top 1%. A cycling depressive is fine. And you fit our physical requirement. Not to put too fine a point on it: oxygen breather, 1.5 to 2.0 metre scale, vision and hearing in the appropriate ranges, and a tetrapod. Actually, it would be better if you had a prehensile tail, but beggars can’t be choosers and we have an augmentation for that.

Logistics Operations Specialist – that sound like someone handling cargo to me. At best a long distance truck driver. And LOS – 9? Who is the boss of an LOS-9?

But what cargo! You’ll be transporting wormholes. The entangled bits have to go the slow way round.
The immediate line manager of an LOS – 9 is an MOS – 8, naturally. The drivers as you quaintly put it are NOS – 9s.
Indenture this is not. It is a long-term trusting relationship. Goodness, much of the time you will be in sleep-like. Estivate, Bruce.

Tēnā koutou,
I am writing to the School to announce that Bruce will be retiring from 5th June 2025. Bruce has had an illustrious career, including becoming Head of the Department of Sociology at the University of The Far North and latterly Chair of the School of Social Sciences at AniUniversity. Bruce has been a key figure across the University since his arrival in 2010. He has had significant influence on the direction of the current School of Psychology and Policy, not least through creating a major in Technology Studies.
Bruce will continue to hold an Honorary Professor role. Thank you for all that you have done, Bruce, for helping to make the University what it is today.
Best wishes,

Bruce Anderson
Bruce Anderson is new to science fiction writing, but not much else. In his tax returns his occupation is ‘social scientist’ but that isn’t fooling anyone. He is from Canterbury, New Zealand and after half a lifetime away he lives there again. Rurally. Major influences are David Ballantyne, Alasdair Gray, John Burnside, Iain Banks, Paul J. McAuley, Charles Stross.
I honestly can’t fully express how deeply your story impacted me. The way you write is so immersive, emotional, and visually striking that every chapter felt alive in my mind. Your storytelling has an incredible cinematic quality, and while reading, I could easily imagine it transforming beautifully into animation, comics, webtoons, manga, cover art, or even edited visual projects. As a professional commission artist, I truly admire stories with this level of potential and would love the chance to share my work with you. If you’d ever like to explore bringing your vision into visual form, feel free to connect with me anytime on Inst@gr@am: elsaa.uwu or Di$c0rd: elsaa_uwu.
